Dang, it’s hard to believe that June is almost half way over, not to mention 2016. Never fear, though. Some of the hottest tickets for great food events are coming up to end the month strong and ring in the waning half of the year. Here’s your guide to some San Diego June Food & Fun Events (that, by the way, will also be supporting local charitable and community causes)!
If you missed I Love Poke, San Diego last month (tell me it ain’t so!), here’s a chance at redemption for you. Our friend Nino Camilo at Ono Yum is putting on a little fundraiser to help repair the stairs at the Carlsbad and Cardiff State Beaches. Admission is free and you can fill up on local craft beer, poke, fish tacos and shaved ice provided by Culture Brewing Co., The Poke Craft, Casanova Fish Tacos and SnoCal Shaved Ice.
The fun starts at high noon at the Carlsbad Campground North – bring a surfboard, beach chair, umbrella and a smile – festivities go ’til there’s no more food left. There’s parking at the North Ponto lot near Tower 28 just south of Palomar Airport Rd in Carlsbad or if you live close just ride your bike or take a little stroll – it’s summer in SoCal!
There are too many great North County restaurants and chefs to name that will be representing at North Eats this year. Of the 30 or so restaurants that will be there, some of my personal favorites that always seem to whip the crowd into a frenzy are Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub, Local Taphouse and Kitchen, Privateer Coal Fire Pizza and Petite Madeline Bakery. And, the newest kid on the block, Chef Willy Eick of the freshly opened 608 is a late entry.
This is an upscale tasting event brought to you by local gourmet purveyors Baker and Olive and at $65 a head is a steal. There is no way you can possibly eat and taste everything that will be on display here…I double-dog dare you. The event is from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26th at Cape Rey, 1 Ponto Road, Carlsbad, CA 92011 and $5 of every ticket will be donated to Feeding America San Diego. Get your tickets here.
I have a soft spot for this event. All proceeds from Collaboration Kitchen go to local San Diego charities and causes. It’s a popup dinner event held in a fish processing plant (Catalina Offshore Products, 5202 Lovelock St, San Diego, CA 92110) with an army of volunteers behind the scenes (which means the half of the warehouse you’re not sitting in).
If you’re into that whole laughing while you eat, snorting wine through your nose, learning how to cook interesting stuff and being a part of something that is just downright cool, this might be the event for you (bring a jacket, it’s a fish plant – nice place to be in the Summer!). Sam the Cooking Guy is the chef du jour on Sunday, June 26th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
100% of proceeds from this event will be donated to Blessed Sacrament Parish School to help purchase iPads and laptop carts – you know, those things that make our kids smarter so they can make our future brighter. Trish Watlington, owner of The Red Door in Mission Hills, provides most, if not all of her restaurant’s produce from her backyard family “garden.” Calling this behemoth a garden is akin to calling a 747 jumbo aircraft a kite. It is truly a sight to behold and this 7th installment of her Farmers, Friends and Fishermen dinner series will be held smack dab in the middle of The Red Door Family Garden, 1235 Avocado Ave., El Cajon, CA 92020.
Accompanying The Red Door’s Executive Chef Miguel Valdez will be Anthony Pascale, the lethal, fish filleting Executive Chef of Saiko Sake and Sushi in North Park and Saiko Sushi in Coronado. All that’s needed now are the friends – that’s you! Tickets are $150 for this Sunday, June 26th, 4:30 – 9:30 p.m. event, with gratuities and wine pairings included. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to The Berry Good Food Foundation and Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center.
